On August 18th I was given the opportunity to photograph the up and coming Afrolatino Festival in Seattle. Growing up in Mexico, I learned that Africans played a huge part in the development of Latin America, but not by their own free will. Just like in the the United States, Africans were brought to Latin American countries as slaves to work the mines or sugar cane plantations. Along with them they brought their culture, religion, language, arts, food and music that over time has fused with European and indigenous cultures. The Afrolatino Festival celebrates that fusion and it teaches the younger generations about their roots.
